Learning About Horns with Mother Goose Time

Today we continued our week of learning about orchestra instruments.  This was my favorite day so far, but that might be because it was also the day that Little Guy did the best!

Our day's activity didn't start off the best.  First up was working on his My Little Journal and decorating the front of it.  He started by using paints to make dots (his first time painting- we are not a very artsy craftsy family, mostly just crayons around here), which he really enjoyed.  We also looked at which of his dots were big and which were small, so we added some math in there.  Then he was supposed to draw a picture of himself playing an instrument.  He can't draw anything.  Not only can he not draw anything, but he doesn't really want to try.  Mostly he wants to "write" letters, and when I ask him to do something, he asks me for help.  Time to encourage a LOT more independence I guess.

Next we played Guess the Sound.  We listened to clips of different instruments being played, then we were supposed to use the orchestra matching cards to match the sounds with the instruments, but the clips were long so we really just played a simple matching game.  He rocked at knowing all the names.  I was so impressed I recorded it!  I will probably continue to bring these out sometimes to refresh his memory because I think its so cute my 2 year old knows his instruments.

We read Tubby the Tuba next, which was a cute story, and Little Guy really liked it, he looked at it quite a few times after school time was over, and we listened to the audio book too.

Next we did Breath Control, which was kind of a continuation of Longest Breath yesterday.  Today he was supposed to keep the cotton ball on a line of masking tape while blowing on it with a straw.  He managed to do it by blowing it a little at a time and then moving closer.  He kept wanting to bite the straw which made it harder for him.
Problem Solving!
We finished up with Quiet and Loud Sounds.  The discussion question was "Do yo
u prefer loud or soft music?"  At first he said quiet, but when I asked him what always said when I turned music on in the car "Listen music loud please", he changed his answer to loud.  Then he got to pick an instrument (he chose the xylophone) and I conducted.  When my arms were up, he was loud, when they were down, he was quiet.  He did really well, and even wanted to take a turn conducting me!

I am a blog ambassador for Mother Goose Time.  My son and I receive free curriculum in exchange for sharing our experiences.  All opinions are my own and not influenced by the fact that I get it for free!

Manipulatives Monday GIVEAWAY from Mother Goose Time - closed

Giveaway closed! Thank you so much to everyone who entered, I really appreciate it! I have excellent news!  Today is Manipulatives Monday, and Mother Goose Time  is giving away a great prize!  One lucky winner will receive TWO bags of manipulatives!  Mother Goose Time will chose the prizes, but I assure you, whatever they send will be a lot of fun for your children! Manipulatives are a big hit in our house.  Every month we get two new bags of manipulatives, and every month Little Guy asks if he can play with them before the month starts.  The answer is always no, but he tries every month anyways.  During the month we use them for the assigned activities but after we are done with the curriculum, I let him add them to his toy collection. One thing that is in almost every box is a set of counters.  These are often in the shape of animals, which are Little Guy's favorites.  They are used for a variety of activities, and are alwa...

God Made You Just Right by Jill Roman Lord - A Review

Most of the books I review are for adults, but I got a chance to review God Made You Just Right, which is a board book.  From the back of the book: You're brilliantly created, and there's no one else like you!  With simple, rhyming text and whimsical illustrations, this book is a welcome reminder for little ones that God created each of us in just the right way. I love the artwork, it is colorful and engaging, which should catch the attention of small children, but still nice to look at for adults.  The text is encouraging and has a good rhyme pattern, which I always appreciate in books for small children.  It isn't a story, but poetry telling children that God knew exactly what He was doing when He created each part of each person.  I love that it talks about the things you uniquely need to be able to fulfill God's plan for you. At the end of the book is Jeremiah 29:11, which gives scriptural support to the rest of the book.  My only...
