Friendly Bees and Positive Behavior

When we started with Mother Goose Time, I had no idea that one of the benefits would be a behavior modification tool!

Despite his mild disgust at seeing pictures of ACTUAL bees, Little Guy LOVES the Friendly Bees that are a part of the curriculum.  Last month our Friendly Bee was wise.  He made good choices.  To illustrate making good choices, we put the Wise Bee in a "hive" made from the geoboards we got in February.

Then I had Little Guy leave the room so he wouldn't see me throwing toys in the house, and threw yellow and blue connecting cubes all around the room, and called him back.  I told him we were pretending that the yellow blocks were food for the bee, but the blue blocks were dangerous for the bee.  We had to make wise choices and only pick up the yellow "food".  (Learning about character traits AND colors!)

He picked up all the yellow ones, and none of the blue ones.  After we learn about our character trait there are always badges to give the kids to celebrate.  Little Guy loves these.

What does this have to do with behavior modification?  Well, my son loves these bees so much that the two months we have done the Friendly Bee activity (sometimes they are very much group activities and hard to adjust to just one kid) I have been able to use them to help him remember to behave.

The first month was a Patient Bee.  Since then I have asked him a number of times to be patient, and he always says "Like a Friendly Bee!" and exercises patience.  This Wise Bee has proven even more useful.  I have actually been able to head off TANTRUMS by asking him if he is making a wise choice.  He USUALLY stops his tantrum and acts wisely.  It is borderline amazing!

I have the badges taped to magnets on our refrigerator, and when he is particularly patient, and I think of it, I stick the badge on him.  He always loves it, and sometimes if he is being wise or patient he will ask for the badge.  I kind of wish I had a laminator, because they would hold up a lot better...

I have decided that these are so effective at teaching my son I need to prioritize them, and make up my own activity if the one provided doesn't work for our situation.  I am going to go back through my old stuff and see what bees I missed!

*Mother Goose Time supplies us with curriculum in exchange for our experiences and pictures.  We don't pay for it, but we are honest about it!*

Manipulatives Monday GIVEAWAY from Mother Goose Time - closed

Giveaway closed! Thank you so much to everyone who entered, I really appreciate it! I have excellent news!  Today is Manipulatives Monday, and Mother Goose Time  is giving away a great prize!  One lucky winner will receive TWO bags of manipulatives!  Mother Goose Time will chose the prizes, but I assure you, whatever they send will be a lot of fun for your children! Manipulatives are a big hit in our house.  Every month we get two new bags of manipulatives, and every month Little Guy asks if he can play with them before the month starts.  The answer is always no, but he tries every month anyways.  During the month we use them for the assigned activities but after we are done with the curriculum, I let him add them to his toy collection. One thing that is in almost every box is a set of counters.  These are often in the shape of animals, which are Little Guy's favorites.  They are used for a variety of activities, and are alwa...

God Made You Just Right by Jill Roman Lord - A Review

Most of the books I review are for adults, but I got a chance to review God Made You Just Right, which is a board book.  From the back of the book: You're brilliantly created, and there's no one else like you!  With simple, rhyming text and whimsical illustrations, this book is a welcome reminder for little ones that God created each of us in just the right way. I love the artwork, it is colorful and engaging, which should catch the attention of small children, but still nice to look at for adults.  The text is encouraging and has a good rhyme pattern, which I always appreciate in books for small children.  It isn't a story, but poetry telling children that God knew exactly what He was doing when He created each part of each person.  I love that it talks about the things you uniquely need to be able to fulfill God's plan for you. At the end of the book is Jeremiah 29:11, which gives scriptural support to the rest of the book.  My only...
