Learning Through Play - Mother Goose TIme

Polar Bear and Quail Day was a LOT of fun!  This month our Mother Goose Time theme is A to Zoo animals, and although we have not been going in order, or doing everything, we are having a blast with the activities we have been doing.

The first thing we did was play ZooGo - which was a zoo themed version of UNO.  We talked about how animals like to play, and remembered what the Polar Bears at the zoo were doing when we saw them.  Then we played.  Thankfully the girls have been playing lots of games with Little Guy lately, including UNO so he had some idea what was going on.


Little Guy won the first round, so I challenged him to a rematch.  Which he also won.  So basically I got my demolished by a three year old at ZooGo.  While playing this fun game, Little Guy worked on matching colors, matching animals, taking turns, and being a good sport.

Next we played a fun game about eggs and letters.  I didn't feel like finding the materials to build a more nest like nest, so we went the classy route and used our laundry basket full of socks.  We talked about how lots of animals like to steal eggs and eat them.


Little Guy decided to be a stinky skunk who was stealing quail eggs.  I put a letter tile (like Scrabble tiles, but colorful and plastic) in each of the plastic eggs.  Then Little Guy went to the "nest" and put one of the eggs on his spoon.  He carried back to me, we "broke" it open and saw what letter was inside.  The game was supposed to be over when he found a "Q" for quail, but since that was the first one we found, we just kept going until we got them all.

I really liked today.  Little Guy worked on a wide variety of skills in just these two activities.  It was fun for both of us, and he didn't even know he was learning!  Mother Goose Time is great at having a wide variety of activities, to engage all types of learners.  Some of the ideas are more overtly learning projects, while others are completely learning through play.

God Made You Just Right by Jill Roman Lord - A Review

Most of the books I review are for adults, but I got a chance to review God Made You Just Right, which is a board book.  From the back of the book: You're brilliantly created, and there's no one else like you!  With simple, rhyming text and whimsical illustrations, this book is a welcome reminder for little ones that God created each of us in just the right way. I love the artwork, it is colorful and engaging, which should catch the attention of small children, but still nice to look at for adults.  The text is encouraging and has a good rhyme pattern, which I always appreciate in books for small children.  It isn't a story, but poetry telling children that God knew exactly what He was doing when He created each part of each person.  I love that it talks about the things you uniquely need to be able to fulfill God's plan for you.
