Learning About Praying Mantises with Mother Goose Time

So.  May, much like April, was not our biggest success, Mother Goose Time-wise.  What we did was fun, but it was not very much.  The last day (that we completed) was Praying Mantis Day.

We started out with the Invitation to Create, which would have been much better if I had brought regular glue, rather than a glue stick, but either way, Little Guy had fun, which is really what matters when it comes to art projects.

I don't remember exactly what he did with each thing, because the glue didn't hold the pipe cleaners on, so it went in the garbage as soon as he wasn't paying attention, but he did tell me what everything was.  It wasn't until the last few months that he has really planned what he is doing, and been able to describe his art to me after he finishes, so I am always happy when he can.

Little Guy is so good at cutting now, but his children's scissors were no match for his limited cutting skills, so for the pipe cleaners, he told me where to cut and I cut them for him.  I asked him what he was going to be using the pipe cleaner for, and he told me legs.  So I (of course) reminded him that all insects have six legs and had him count out the correct number of legs.

We also looked at the different shapes you can see on insects, such as praying mantises, then used our Insect Builders to build a bug.  He preferred my bug to his, and kept trying to trade me.  When I wouldn't trade him, he changed his around until it looked a lot like mine.  I didn't get any pictures of our bugs though, sorry!

I TRIED to take a picture of our last preschool activity - Wait and Catch - but it was a little to fast paced for my phone to catch.  In case anyone actually thought that praying mantises are pious little insects, they are not.  They just hold their front legs together while waiting still and patient for their prey.  When it is the perfect time to catch their prey (they can even catch small lizards!), they extend them with extreme speed.  We replicated this by tying a clothes pin onto yarn.  Then we clipped on a Bug Counter, and took turns swinging it back and forth.  The person that wasn't swinging it back and forth tried to catch the bug.  It was pretty fun, and Little Guy wanted to keep playing a loooooong time!

It was a fun afternoon, and Little Guy enjoyed it as usual.  Mother Goose Time is so much fun!

I receive Mother Goose Time free of charge in exchange for sharing our experiences.  All opinions are my own.

Manipulatives Monday GIVEAWAY from Mother Goose Time - closed

Giveaway closed! Thank you so much to everyone who entered, I really appreciate it! I have excellent news!  Today is Manipulatives Monday, and Mother Goose Time  is giving away a great prize!  One lucky winner will receive TWO bags of manipulatives!  Mother Goose Time will chose the prizes, but I assure you, whatever they send will be a lot of fun for your children! Manipulatives are a big hit in our house.  Every month we get two new bags of manipulatives, and every month Little Guy asks if he can play with them before the month starts.  The answer is always no, but he tries every month anyways.  During the month we use them for the assigned activities but after we are done with the curriculum, I let him add them to his toy collection. One thing that is in almost every box is a set of counters.  These are often in the shape of animals, which are Little Guy's favorites.  They are used for a variety of activities, and are alwa...

God Made You Just Right by Jill Roman Lord - A Review

Most of the books I review are for adults, but I got a chance to review God Made You Just Right, which is a board book.  From the back of the book: You're brilliantly created, and there's no one else like you!  With simple, rhyming text and whimsical illustrations, this book is a welcome reminder for little ones that God created each of us in just the right way. I love the artwork, it is colorful and engaging, which should catch the attention of small children, but still nice to look at for adults.  The text is encouraging and has a good rhyme pattern, which I always appreciate in books for small children.  It isn't a story, but poetry telling children that God knew exactly what He was doing when He created each part of each person.  I love that it talks about the things you uniquely need to be able to fulfill God's plan for you. At the end of the book is Jeremiah 29:11, which gives scriptural support to the rest of the book.  My only...
