The story was interesting, and held my attention while reading it. The characters were (mostly) realistic. The heroes and heroines were very likeable, the villains completely detestable. Faith featured prominently in the story, and was an important part of the relationships that are built throughout the story.
It is the second in the Sapphire Brides series, but I have not read the first, and had no confusion, so it works very well as a stand alone novel.
The only thing about the book I wasn't completely sure if I liked was the fact that it seemed rather far-fetched. The absolute evilness of the villain was a little off-putting and made the story seem less realistic.
If you like historical romance books, I highly recommend reading A Beauty Refined. It is a Christian book and doesn't have any risqué scenes.
