Teaching Children About Great Art - Mother Goose Time

Little Guy and I have been having a lot of fun with Mother Goose Time this month.  I think it is really wonderful to teach him about great works of art, because what could be cuter than a three year old being able to identify famous artwork! 


This is Little Guy's recreation of Girl With a Pearl Earring, next to a print of the original.  Yes, his lacks the detail of the Vermeer's, but it does have something it has never had before.  Facial features!  And in the right places!  Alright, I admit that I instructed him where they should go, but I have done that plenty of times before, and he just scribbled randomly.  So I was pretty impressed.  It doesn't take much to be impressed when you are a mom...


This is his version of Monet's Chrysanthemums, which was made with a pokey ball (not to be confused with a PokeBall) and paint.  It was a lot prettier before he glued his "shapes" on, but I have REALLY been working on letting him do his own thing more often, artistically speaking.

Since summer has really been hectic around here, we have not gotten as far through the box as I wish we had.  Our August theme is Science Lab, and I really want to do the activities, but I think I will combine the science and art days next month so we can explore more art, but without falling further and further behind.  I love Mother Goose Time, and I hate that I don't use the curriculum to its fullest every month, but I am thankful for the opportunity to use this wonderful product free of charge in exchange for sharing all the fun stuff with you!

God Made You Just Right by Jill Roman Lord - A Review

Most of the books I review are for adults, but I got a chance to review God Made You Just Right, which is a board book.  From the back of the book: You're brilliantly created, and there's no one else like you!  With simple, rhyming text and whimsical illustrations, this book is a welcome reminder for little ones that God created each of us in just the right way. I love the artwork, it is colorful and engaging, which should catch the attention of small children, but still nice to look at for adults.  The text is encouraging and has a good rhyme pattern, which I always appreciate in books for small children.  It isn't a story, but poetry telling children that God knew exactly what He was doing when He created each part of each person.  I love that it talks about the things you uniquely need to be able to fulfill God's plan for you.
