Rag Curls - Part 1

I want to be a "girly girl".  I mean to some extent I am, as in I hate creepy, crawly things, and love to read books intended for girls.  But I super suck at doing the whole getting pretty thing.  I mean I wear make-up once a week (and thats a good week).  Doing my hair involves one of three things: 1) Brushing it   2) Putting it in a pony tail  or 3) Running a flat iron over it.  Actually I pretty much always brush it before doing things 2 & 3, but whatever.

Now two of my friends are selling Avon, so I have been ordering some make-up and lotions from them, hoping that by spending money on my quest to look feminine I will actually take the time to try.

Last night I was trying to find retro hair styles I could do, because I am pretty much in love with how women looked in the 1940's and 1950's.  Turns out that there was a lot of perming involved, and they women all had relatively short hair.  Seeing as how cutting my hair can be traumatic, the Bible directly tells us to have long hair, and my husband informed me that pretty girls have long hair, cutting it isn't really an option.  So I decided to try something else.

This is my attempt at using the age old technique of using rags to curl your hair.  I was going to try pin curls, but I realized that wrapping up my quite long hair in pin curls would be quite a long and difficult process.  Plus I would have had to buy bobby pins, and since I am been sewing lately, I have quite alot of rags lying around anyways.  One of the best things about this way of doing your hair is that its featured in the Little House books!

Little House in the Big Woods

This is me with the "rollers" in my hair.  You are supposed to have your whole head done in them, but I didn't know how it would turn out, plus most of my fabric scraps are in big chunks and I didn't feel like cutting them.  So the fact that I only did four is really a testament to my laziness.  Oh and by the way, I actually have quite dry skin, but between the flash and the lotion I had just smeared on my face, it looks like I am an ad for Crisco.  Oh and I guess my bra is showing, but whatever, I was in bed.  Its hardly a slutty looking picture even if you can see my bra.
It got REALLY curly, although back in the day that might have been the style, I mean maybe that is why all the women looked like they had short hair.  I kind of like it, but with the rest of my hair being straight it looks a bit ridiculous.
I think its good I didn't cut it and THEN curl it, or it would probably look like I had NO hair.

I can never pick which pictures look best, so I just take a million.
I know its stupid, because DUH, but I think I look kind of like an old-fashioned lady with my hair all curled.  Next time I won't brush it so it doesn't get quite so frizzy.  Plus use bigger rags so that it doesn't fish-hook at the ends.

Here the super curliness is tucked behind my ears, which looks much less old-fashioned and fun, but does allow me to see better.

This last picture is just because everyone always whines at me because I don't smile in pictures.  So I smiled, and it was fuzzy, but I don't look fat, so whatever!

During my "research" last night, I realized one reason that women's hair looked some much more put together than ours does.  Because they set it once a week and then didn't wash it again until they were ready to set it again.  So it wasn't hours everyday, its was hours once a week.

I plan to do my whole head next time I wash my hair, so I will do a part two posting soon.

  1. First of all, my favorite pic of the ones above is the last one where you're smiling. You have such a pretty smile. Your curls look really good too, better than I could ever do. Every time I curl my hair, I look like I'm 6 years old.

Second, never have you ever looked even remotely fat or unhealthy since we've met. So you have nothing to worry about.

Thirdly, you should totally do Avon again too and we could all be Avon buddies! :p

Why I Choose Christian Light Education Homeschool Curriculum

Last summer I decided that I was going to homeschool our foster daughters while they were on summer vacation.  There were two reasons for this: 1) Two of the three girls were behind academically.  I really hoped that by working through the summer we could help them get on track for the next school year.  They left our house soon after school started, so I don't know how well it worked. 2) I don't allow my children much in the way of screen time, and these girls were accustomed to having TV and tablets in their rooms all the time.  So they never really knew what to do with themselves.  I figured school work for the morning would help with that dilemma. Choosing a curriculum was difficult for me.  I know that some people bounce around and change curriculum a lot, but whatever I got, I hoped I would like enough to use the non-consumables with Little Guy.  I don't like wasting money, and I hate the idea of some topics falling through the cracks because different curricu

Training Children vs. Raising Children

In many conservative circles, parents refer to training their children.  This term comes from Proverbs 22:6, which says "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."  Almost unfailingly, when you get into a discussion on this topic, there is a parent that is appalled at the use of "training" on children.  Nine times out of ten, they say "You train dogs, you RAISE children."
