Keeping My Social Bar Filled

I am not a popular person.  Sure I have 130 friends on Facebook, but although I have met all of them in real life, most of them I have not talked to in years.  Plus 130 friends on Facebook is a really small number.

I have three friends that I see on a (semi) regular basis (plus a handful of people I only talk to online, that I consider my real friends.  And of course my 3 year old best friend: Hadlee).  Which is fine.  Quality over quantity is definitely the rule for friendships.  As a socially awkward person with no kids, weird hobbies and opinions, and no desire to "go out" (unless its to like, Goodwill and McDonalds) its hard to find people to be friends with.  Plus I don't go to work, or to school, so I would have to make a real effort to make new friends.  The friends that I do have, I have known for at least 5 years, up to about 22 years.

I read in a book once (I don't remember what book, maybe The Plug In Drug by Marie Winn?) that the reason, or at least one of the reasons that television is so addictive is because your subconscious brain doesn't realize that it isn't real.  So you fill the need for social interaction by watching people on TV.  Even though you can't see it, you are kind of like a Sim and need to keep your motives up to be able to perform the tasks asked of you, including your social bar!

I think this is the reason behind a habit that annoys Michael, or at least baffles him:

I watch the same shows over and over again

Netflix makes it very easy to re-watch the shows that you like, which is why I find myself preferring it to satellite.  When you re-watch a show, its like you already know the "people" you are watching.  In a sad, pathetic way, its like visiting old friends.

My top five show to watch repeatedly are:
  • My Name is Earl
  • Eureka
  • I Love Lucy
  • The Beverly Hillbillies
  • Yes, Dear
What are your favorite shows?  Do you like to watch them repeatedly or is once enough for you?

Breastfeeding An Adopted Child - The Tenth Day of Christmas

Today we are hearing from Teglene.  Her story is pretty long, but trust me, it is totally worth reading through!  She also has a great blog, called The Breastfeeding Mother . I always knew I wanted to breastfeed my children. I couldn ’t imagine doing it any differently. I was lucky enough to give birth to two beautiful boys and I enjoyed breastfeeding them both. Not that it was easy or without struggle, but it was what I wanted to do and loved doing it. In fact, I liked it so much, and felt so passionate about breastfeeding that I became a La Leche League Leader, so that I could help other breastfeeding moms. I really took to the idea of “Mothering through breastfeeding”. It wasn ’t just a feeding method for me, but a relationship with my child. My husband and I always talked about adopting a child who needed a family. We thought, if we can’t have kids of our own then we will adopt. Even if we can have kids of our own, maybe we will still adopt. After the birt...

Manipulatives Monday GIVEAWAY from Mother Goose Time - closed

Giveaway closed! Thank you so much to everyone who entered, I really appreciate it! I have excellent news!  Today is Manipulatives Monday, and Mother Goose Time  is giving away a great prize!  One lucky winner will receive TWO bags of manipulatives!  Mother Goose Time will chose the prizes, but I assure you, whatever they send will be a lot of fun for your children! Manipulatives are a big hit in our house.  Every month we get two new bags of manipulatives, and every month Little Guy asks if he can play with them before the month starts.  The answer is always no, but he tries every month anyways.  During the month we use them for the assigned activities but after we are done with the curriculum, I let him add them to his toy collection. One thing that is in almost every box is a set of counters.  These are often in the shape of animals, which are Little Guy's favorites.  They are used for a variety of activities, and are alwa...
