Reading Horizons Review

A long time ago, and I mean A LONG TIME AGO, I received some curriculum to try.

It was called Reading Horizons Discovery, and it is designed to teach children, between 4 and 9 years old, how to read.

I was supposed to review it, and honestly, there have been a couple of points in time where I got super excited about all the products that people would send me to review, and ended up really, really overwhelmed and didn't manage to review them all.

I used this quite some time ago, with a little girl I used to baby-sit, and didn't get very far because she started preschool and our time together was shortened.  I will do my best to give a proper review from what I remember.

The program comes with 6 guides, a number of flash/review cards, a games supplement, posters, and story books for each level.

It is an incredibly thorough program, and very easy to teach, with it all scripted out for you in the guides.  A lot of work is done on a white board, and there are no workbooks.

Each lesson reviews the past work and adds something new to learn.  It starts at the beginning and by the end of the curriculum (which lasts for a couple of years) the child should be an excellent reader.

I didn't use this curriculum with my son.  I honestly forgot I had it sitting in my closet, or I might have tried it.  I don't think I would have gotten very far with it though, because it is entirely teacher led, with no independent work (that I remember).  I am more of a teach them, then leave them to their seat work kind of mama.

That being said, although it doesn't fit MY teaching style, I think it is an amazing curriculum and would work very well for small children, because it doesn't have a lot of writing.  It is recommended for use with children that are struggling to learn to read.

Comfy Joey Wool Sling Review and Giveaway

Did you enter to win the $25 Comfy Joey voucher and lose?  Well, GREAT NEWS!  Comfy Joey is amazingly generous and I am able to offer not one, but TWO more vouchers!  Along with the Dolly Sling, I was also given a Newborn Wool Sling .  I was super excited when I got the sling in the mail.  I love baby-wearing , and trying out new carriers is always fun. The Newborn Wool Slings are for use between birth and 25lbs.  Miss Baby is 25 lbs. so she is right at the top of the weight limit (they are safe up to 30 lbs. 25lbs. is for comfort).  It is a handwash in cold water item and should be air dried.  This sling is so cozy and cuddly that I have not gotten a chance to use it very much, because we have had a quite warm summer.  It is a grey, tan, and cream houndstooth with silver rings, which means it matches everything you could possibly want to wear it with.  The sling is very well made, and the rails are pretty easy to adjust. ...

Manipulatives Monday GIVEAWAY from Mother Goose Time - closed

Giveaway closed! Thank you so much to everyone who entered, I really appreciate it! I have excellent news!  Today is Manipulatives Monday, and Mother Goose Time  is giving away a great prize!  One lucky winner will receive TWO bags of manipulatives!  Mother Goose Time will chose the prizes, but I assure you, whatever they send will be a lot of fun for your children! Manipulatives are a big hit in our house.  Every month we get two new bags of manipulatives, and every month Little Guy asks if he can play with them before the month starts.  The answer is always no, but he tries every month anyways.  During the month we use them for the assigned activities but after we are done with the curriculum, I let him add them to his toy collection. One thing that is in almost every box is a set of counters.  These are often in the shape of animals, which are Little Guy's favorites.  They are used for a variety of activities, and are alwa...
